Wedding cakes are terribly expensive aren't they? Gorgeous is a given but even I who loves, loves, loves cake hesitates at the idea of spending £600 plus on one, even it is art. Yes, they can double as dessert but they can also be found very well priced if you're prepared to check out the supermarket cake section. They aren't all plain white iced fruit cake layers now - though there's nothing wrong with that especially if you're creative and can whip up something prettier with ribbons and flowers - and some shops are really pushing the boat out with prettily decorated cakes. Check these out:
Clockwise from top left: OK, Asda's wedding cake is very plain but I like the orange flower (gerberas?) suggestion. The layers cost £6.48 for the small, £7.11 for the medium and £13.48 for the large. So, £27.07 for all three! Next up is Tesco. Their 'celebration cake' looks very similar to the Asda version except they've added a few swirls of icing. Prices are £6.48 - £13.48 too. It could be said that the advantages of these two is that they can be picked up in store any time.
Waitrose have taken the wedding cakes up a notch with a range of white iced, chocolate, polka dots, chocolate curls and sugar flowers. They are more expensive ranging from £45 for a single tier to £420 for a four tier cake with choices of sponge or fruit. I think they would compete very well with designer cakes, don't you? (The mixed sponge three tier rose petal cake is £280, the four tier pink & white polka dot cake is £295). They can also do a cupcake tower and iced favour biscuits. You will have to order 30-42 days in advance but that's very reasonable.
I think M&S, above, really deserved an image set of their own. Look at these cakes! The three tier striped sponge is £249 and there's a matching mini cake option (£35 for 6) - I love the colours of orange, purple and grey. Very now! The soft iced pearl cake is eternily popular. I don't know if it comes with the purple flower arrangement (I think not, so easily customisable to your colours) and it's just £179-£199. There's a mini cake option for this one too (also £35 for 6). Aren't they charming? They only need 21 says advance ordering, again, super reasonable, both for price and time.
Of course, if Fortum & Mason is more your thing you could go a bit mad on a Peggy Porschen cake where prices are £870 for a cupcake tower and from £950 for a tiered cake. Ouch! The two pictured are the tumbling roses which is a mere £1450 and the Crystal Chandelier jewelled cake stand with individual cakes (£950). Isn't it pretty?
